Tomomi Sunaba
Tomomi Sunaba (砂庭 智美, sunaba tomomi?, born on August 24, 1976(1976-08-24)), better known in Japan by her ring name Windy Tomomi (WINDY智美?, previously 風智美), is a Japanese female mixed martial artist and kickboxer. Sunaba has fought in several kickboxing and MMA promotions.
As of January 2012 (2012-01), Sunaba is ranked as the #10 flyweight (107-115 lb) according to the Unified Women's Mixed Martial Arts Rankings.[2]
Background
Sunaba was born on August 24, 1976(1976-08-24) in Sannohe District, Aomori Prefecture, Japan.[1][3][4][5]
Sunaba started training in Karate when she was in 6th grade of elementary school.[5] She attended to Japan Women's Junior College of Physical Education, where she was one of the top contenders in national championships of Kyokushin kaikan and Seidokaikan.[5]
Kickboxing career
Her first professional kickboxing match took place on April 29, 1999 (1999-04-29) in JDStar event Jd' 3rd Anniversary against Yoko Takahashi, in a fight that ended in a majority draw.[3][6]
On September 3, 1999 (1999-09-03) at All Japan Kickboxing Federation (AJKF) event Wave-VI, Sunaba got a majority draw against Izumi Noguchi.[6]
Sunaba got her first professional victory on January 21, 2000 (2000-01-21) at AJKF's Legend-I, where she defeated Takako Shimonoseki by unanimous decision.[7][8]
At AJKF's Legend-IX on October 22, 2000 (2000-10-22), Sunaba defeated Noriko Yoshida by unanimous decision.[7][9]
On December 9, 2000 (2000-12-09), Sunaba was defeated via decision by Italian amateur boxer and future 2001, 2002 and 2005 World Amateur Champion Simona Galassi at the third Memorial Fabrizio De Chiara: Italia vs Giappone celebrated at Palazzetto dello sport in Rome, Italy.[7][10]
Sunaba next fought on April 22, 2001 (2001-04-22) against Dutch Muay Thai kickboxer Ilonka Elmont at Millennium Sport event Veni, vidi, vici in Veenendaal, losing by majority decision.[11][12][13][14]
In her third loss, Sunaba was defeated by Greek kickboxer Kalliopi Yeitsidou via decision on May 19, 2001 (2001-05-19) at Champions League Kickboxing Mania.[11][14]
At Thaibox Gala on September 29, 2001 (2001-09-29) in Holland, Sunaba defeated Dutch Sabine Hendriks by unanimous decision.[11][14]
Returning to Japan, Sunaba defeated Dutch fighter Annette Balint by unanimous decision on November 30, 2001 (2001-11-30) at AJKF's Light on.[15][16]
On February 22, 2002 (2002-02-22), Sunaba defeated Dutch Caccia Zoma by unanimous decision at Thaibox Gala in Holland.[17]
At AJKF's event Golden Trigger on September 6, 2002 (2002-09-06), Sunaba got her fourth straight victory by defeating Izumi Noguchi, with whom Sunaba had tied in 1999, via majority decision.[17][18][19]
Sunaba knocked out South Korean fighter White Tiger after knocking her down three times in the first round at AJKF's Girls standing fight 1st.bout - Girls Shock! on January 26, 2003 (2003-01-26).[20][21][22]
Ending her winning streak, Sunaba was defeated via split decision by Dutch kickboxer Kim on February 28, 2003 (2003-02-28) at Rising Sun in Holland.[20][21]
On July 20, 2003 (2003-07-20) at AJKF's Kick out, Sunaba was knocked out for the first time in her career, being defeated by Greek Kalliopi Yeitsidou, who had already defeated Sunaba in 2001, in the fourth round.[20][21][23]
Sunaba rebounded with a unanimous decision victory over Italian Silvia Valicelli at Girls standing fight - Girls Shock III on November 11, 2003 (2003-11-11).[20][21][24]
On December 26, 2003 (2003-12-26), Sunaba was defeated by Women's International Kick Boxing Association (WIKBA) #1 ranked fighter Thai Daoprasuk Petchopas via unanimous decision at Womens Muay Thai in Thailand in a super bantamweight fight.[20][21][24]
At AJKF's Girls standing fight - Girls Shock IV on March 7, 2004 (2004-03-07), Sunaba defeated Gon! Asami by unanimous decision.[25][26][27]
On June 27, 2004 (2004-06-27) at Girls standing fight - Girls Shock V, Sunaba defeated Belgian Muay Thai specialist Claudia Fontebasso by unanimous decision.[25][26][28]
Sunaba next defeated South Korean Kyung Eun Ryu by TKO in the third round, after her corner threw the towel in when Sunaba was punching her in the third round, on November 5, 2005 (2005-11-05) at AJKF's Rock'n Roll*U5 FIGHT*Hill it!.[28][29][30]
At AJKF's event Cub♀Kick's-1 celebrated on April 16, 2006 (2006-04-16), Sunaba defeated South Korean fighter Min Hee Shin by unanimous decision. [31][32][33]
In her fifth straight victory and third against South Korean fighters, Sunaba defeated Su Jeong Lim by majority decision on October 7, 2006 (2006-10-07) at AJKF's Cub*Kick's 3 days 1st - AJ Night: Tradition.[34][35]
This was Sunaba's final kickboxing fight to date.
Mixed martial arts career
Sunaba made her MMA debut on May 6, 2002 (2002-05-06) in MMA promotion Smackgirl at Smackgirl: Golden Gate 2002, defeating Mari Kaneko by split decision.[36]
In her next bout on July 26, 2002 (2002-07-26) at Ax Vol. 5, Sunaba was disqualified for kicking in the face her opponent, Ikuma Hoshino, while she was on the ground at the beginning of the second round.[37]
At Smackgirl: Japan Cup 2002 Opening Round celebrated on October 5, 2002 (2002-10-05), Sunaba submitted Mika Harigai with a sleeper hold in the opening round the middleweight tournament.[38]
On November 9, 2002 (2002-11-09) at Smackgirl: Japan Cup 2002 Episode 2, Sunaba was defeated by Mari Kaneko, whom Sunaba had defeated in her debut, via unanimous decision during the middleweight tournament semifinals.[39]
Sunaba got her second consecutive loss at the hands of Smackgirl middleweight tournament champion Yuka Tsuji by technical submission, after the referee stopped the fight when Sunaba was tighly held in an armbar in the first round at Smackgirl: Third Season II on April 2, 2003 (2003-04-02).[40]
Sunaba rebounded with a KO victory over Makoto, connecting in the second round a knee to the face that left Makoto unable to stand up for a while on June 4, 2003 (2003-06-04) at Smackgirl: Third Season IV.[41]
At the event Cross Section held on April 18, 2004 (2004-04-18), Sunaba was submitted by Masako Yoshida with a triangle armbar in the second round.[42][43]
On September 4, 2004 (2004-09-04) at another Cross Section event, Sunaba was defeated via armbar submission by Kazue Matake in the second round.[44][45][46]
Sunaba got back on the winning track in her debut in Pancrase by defeating Yoko Hattori by TKO, after beating Hattori with punches during the second round and forcing Hattori's corner to stop the fight at Pancrase 2005 Spiral Tour on June 5, 2005 (2005-06-05).[45][47]
On July 10, 2005 (2005-07-10) at Pancrase 2005 Spiral Tour, Sunaba defeated Misaki Takimoto by unanimous decision.[48][49]
Continuing her winning streak, on August 17, 2005 (2005-08-17) at Smackgirl 2005: Dynamic!!, Sunaba defeated Maki Yashima by unanimous decision.[50][51]
Getting her fourth consecutive victory, Sunaba defeated Sayaka Shioda by TKO (referee stoppage) with punches in the first round on December 4, 2005 (2005-12-04) at Pancrase 2005 Spiral Tour.[52][53]
Sunaba got another TKO victory at Smackgirl 2006: Advent of Goddess on February 15, 2006 (2006-02-15), defeating South Korean Seong Jin Cha with a knee in the first round that left Cha without the will to fight and forced the referee to stop the bout.[54][55]
Ending her winning streak, Sunaba was defeated once again by Yuka Tsuji, who had defeated Sunaba in 2003. This time, Tsuji submitted Sunaba with a rear naked choke at the end of round one, at Smackgirl 2006: Top Girl Battle on June 30, 2006 (2006-06-30).[56][57]
On September 15, 2006 (2006-09-15) at Smackgirl 2006: Women Hold Their Ground, Sunaba defeated Seri Saito by KO, with a knee to the body in the second round that left Saito unable to get up during the referee's count.[58][59]
At Pancrase 2006 Blow Tour on December 10, 2006 (2006-12-10), Sunaba was defeated by Kanako Takeshita via armbar submission in the third round.[60][61]
In an unusual accident, Sunaba, while fighting against England's Rosi Sexton, entangled her right foot during a struggle with Sexton and seriously injured her right ankle; dislocating it during a ground transition in the second round and losing the fight by TKO on February 17, 2007 (2007-02-17) at BodogFight: Costa Rica Combat.[62] The injury was so horrific that even fighters watching the match were shocked.[63] Sunaba immediately received medical assistance and was airlifted to a hospital,[63][64] being operated on in San José, Costa Rica the same day.[62] Afterwards, Sunaba was hospitalized in Japan for four months and received more surgeries due to complications with the screw anchorage and osteomyelitis[65][66][67] before returning to regular training on October 2007 (2007-10).[67]
After almost a year without fighting, Sunaba returned on January 30, 2008 (2008-01-30) at Pancrase 2008 Shining Tour, defeating Emi Tomimatsu by TKO, after punishing Tomimatsu with leg kicks that left her unable to come out for the third round.[68][69]
At Smackgirl World ReMix 2008 Second Round on April 25, 2008 (2008-04-25), Sunaba defeated kickboxer Kozue Nagashima by KO (punches) in the second round, after which Nagashima was damaged enough to be carried on a stretcher.[70][71][72]
Debuting with MMA promotion Valkyrie, Sunaba defeated Emi Fujino by unanimous decision at Valkyrie 01 on November 8, 2008 (2008-11-08).[73][74][75]
During Pancrase 2008 Shining Tour, Sunaba was defeated by Rin Nakai via TKO after Nakai gained the mounted position and started punching Sunaba in the face, forcing the referee to stop the fight in the first round on December 7, 2008 (2008-12-07).[76][77][78][79]
At Valkyrie 02 on April 25, 2009 (2009-04-25) during the featherweight tournament semi-finals, Sunaba was submitted by Kyoko Takabayashi with a rear naked choke in the first round.[80][81][82][83]
In her first draw in MMA, Sunaba and Izumi Noguchi tied once again, as they had done ten years before in kickboxing in 1999, in their bout at Shooto Gig Saitama 1 on August 9, 2009 (2009-08-09).[84][85]
Sunaba was defeated by Miku Matsumoto via unanimous decision at Deep 44 Impact on October 10, 2009 (2009-10-10).[86][87][88]
On November 23, 2009 (2009-11-23), Sunaba was defeated by then #1 Japanese female fighter Megumi Fujii via armbar submission in the first round at Shooto: Revolutionary Exchanges 3.[89][90][91]
Returning to the winning path, Sunaba faced once again Masako Yoshida, who had defeated Sunaba in 2004, this time defeating her by unanimous decision at Valkyrie 04 on February 11, 2010 (2010-02-11).[92][93][94]
Sunaba got another victory on May 9, 2010 (2010-05-09) in Italian MMA promotion Xtreme Combat Italia (XCI) event XC-1: Xtreme MMA Championship 2 held in Rome, Italy, defeating Brazilian Maria Elisabete Tavares by knocking her out with a head kick in the third round.[95][96][97][98]
At Pancrase Passion Tour 8 on September 5, 2010 (2010-09-05), Sunaba defeated American Monica Lovato by unanimous decision.[99][100][101]
On December 5, 2010 (2010-12-05), Sunaba defeated Akiko Naito by majority decision at Pancrase Passion Tour 11.[102]
Sunaba faced Mei Yamaguchi at Pancrase Impressive Tour 3 on April 3, 2011 (2011-04-03).[103] She was defeated by majority decision.[104][105][106]
On July 23, 2011 (2011-07-23), Sunaba faced Sadae Suzumura at Pancrase Impressive Tour 6. She defeated Suzumura by unanimous decision.[107][108]
Shoot boxing
On August 19, 2011 (2011-08-19), Sunaba entered the 2011 Shoot Boxing Girls S-Cup tournament. She faced Miyo Yoshida in the opening round and was defeated by majority decision.[109][110]
